South Sudan has officially opened the first permanent bridge over the River Nile on Thursday, 19 May 2022 in attendance of South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, the Kenyan presidential candidate and AU infrastructure envoy Raila Odinga, as well as the head of Japan’s International Cooperation Agency Tanaka Akihiko.
A great day for the people of South Sudan as the freedom bridge in Juba opens for business. This bridge will play a key role in enhancing connectivity and trade in our region. It is great seeing the project come to fruition. Africa will surely rise! pic.twitter.com/qJFBNJP95O— Raila Odinga (@RailaOdinga) May 19, 2022

The 560-metre long Freedom Bridge in Juba was constructed using a grant from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the government of Japan’s aid agency. According to President Salva Kiir, the Freedom Bridge is a symbol of long and lasting friendship between the people of Japan and South Sudan.
Freedom Bridge replaced a bridge that was fragile and dangerous to cross. Construction on the new bridge began in 2013 but had been suspended multiple times because of political state of the country as well as the COVID-19 pandemic.
Useful for both pedestrians and vehicles, the aim of Freedom Bridge is to improve traffic congestion in Juba.
Many took to social media to comment on the opening of Freedom Bridge.
I know #FreedomBridge in #SouthSudan is a donation from Japan (thank you!) but I find single lane bridges incredibly ignorant of the fact that Juba is a rapidly growing city. If we want to avoid the issues Juba Bridge has been bringing us, we need a dual carriageway bridge.— Adhieu Majok (@modernemeid) May 19, 2022

Thank you to the Japanese Gov't for building the #FreedomBridge! Though, To be honest i LOVE how Junubin get excited with every little new development. Our people are longing to see changes in this country. So LET THEM be happy! Rome wasn't built in one day! #SSOT— Nannah (@NanaAlfred) May 19, 2022

It’s evident from the masses of people who flocked the commissioning of the Freedom Bridge today, how desperate individuals wants to be seen or take credit of things they have zero contributions in. #SSOT #Freedombridge— Maketh Maketh (@MakethMaketh1) May 19, 2022
