Sudan Protests Spread Beyond Sudan

Peaceful demonstrations have been organised at Sudanese embassies in Australia, Canada, Ireland, USA, UK and France between 22 and 25 December.

Protests in Sudan began on 19 December over rising prices such as bread and fuel, both subsidised by the government. Protesters are calling for the overthrow of Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir and his government. Al Bashir has been in power for approximately 30 years, since 1989.

The anti-government protests began in Atbara then spread to Dongola, Port Sudan, El-Gadarif, North Kordofan, Sennar and finally, Khartoum. It is reported that at least 20 people have died in Sudan mostly in El-Gadarif during clashes with riot police. 

London, UK

Organised by Alliance of Sudanese Political Forces – UK and Ireland (ASPF), peaceful demonstrations in London took place in front of the Embassy of Sudan on 22 December with dozens of protesters, holding flags of Sudan and anti-government posters. 

Dublin, Ireland

Calgary, Canada

Peaceful demonstrations in Calgary, Canada took place at City Hall on 22 December with dozens of protesters, holding flags of Sudan and anti-government posters saying, ‘End the violence’, ‘Stop the killing’ and more. 

Texas, USA

Peaceful demonstrations in Texas, USA took place at the Embassy of Sudan on 23 December with dozens of protesters, carrying Sudanese flags and anti-government posters. Another protest took place on 28 December.

Iowa, USA

Peaceful demonstrations in Iowa, USA took place on 23 December where a few protesters, carrying flags of Sudan and addressing Sudan’s economic crisis, called for justice and the overthrow of Al Bashir and his regime. 

Paris, France

Peaceful demonstrations in Paris, France took place on 23 December where a large number of protesters, carrying Sudanese flags and addressing Sudan’s economic crisis, called for justice, and the overthrow of Al Bashir and his regime. 

Victoria, Australia

Peaceful demonstrations in Victoria, Australia took place on 23 December with a few protesters, holding flags of Sudan and addressing current political and economic crisis in Sudan. 

Manchester, UK

Peaceful demonstrations in Manchester took place on 24 December with a few protesters, holding flags of Sudan and addressing the protests in Sudan. 

Washington DC, USA

Peaceful demonstrations in Washington DC took place at the Embassy of Sudan on 24 December with protesters holding flags of Sudan and addressing the protests in Sudan. 

Toronto, Canada

Peaceful demonstrations in Toronto, Canada took place at Yonge-Dundas Square on 25 December (Christmas Day) with at least 400 protesters holding flags of Sudan, showing support to protesters in Sudan, singing the national anthem and calling for the overthrow of Al Bashir.

More peaceful demonstrations are set to take place in different cities in Australia, Canada, UK and USA. In addition, in solidarity with the thousands of people protesting in Sudan, some Facebook users from the Sudanese Diaspora have changed their profile pictures with the Sudanese flag.

Since the protests began, Sudan has called on a state of emergency and imposed a curfew in many of the cities. In addition, the government has shut down internet service and social media sites; and closed schools and universities in Khartoum and other cities in Sudan.

South Sudan

Sudanese refugees in South Sudan and South Sudanese citizens have shown their support to protesters in Sudan and joined them in the overthrow of President Al Bashir.

Montreal, Canada

Peaceful demonstrations in Montreal  Canada took place on 26 December in Phillips Square with protesters holding flags of Sudan and anti-government posters and showing support to protesters in Sudan.

California (San Francisco), USA

Organised by the Sudanese Association of Northern California, peaceful demonstrations in San Francisco, California took place on 29 December at City Hall.
