Sudan Reports 302 New COVID-19 Cases; 2,591 Total Cases and 105 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 302 new COVID-19 cases and eight new deaths on Saturday, 16 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 2,591 and the total number of deaths to 105.

According to the ministry, out of the 302 newly reported cases, 235 are from Khartoum, 11 from El Gezira, 10 from Sennar, 10 from West Darfur, seven from El Gadarif, five from South Darfur, five from North Darfur, three from Blue Nile and one from West Kordofan. Out of the eight newly reported deaths, three are from Khartoum, two from El Gezira, one from each of the following states: El Gadarif, North Darfur and West Darfur.

The ministry also reported 25 new recoveries. To date, 247 have recovered.

Out of the total 2,591 positive cases in Sudan, 2,109 are from Khartoum, 140 from El Gezira, 88 from North Kordofan, 77 from El Gadarif, 60 from Sennar, 24 from South Darfur, 17 from Kassala, 14 from West Darfur, 12 from North Darfur, 10 from River Nile, eight from Ash Shamaliyah, eight from White Nile, six from East Darfur, six from West Kordofan, four from Blue Nile, three from Red Sea, three from South Kordofan and two from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government also announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors are closed for three weeks with the exception of those in the healthcare, and food and beverage sectors. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

The Federal Ministry of Health recently launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
