The Sudanese toub is a traditional Sudanese women’s garment, word by women in Sudan, Mauritania and other African countries. They are worn at all occasions from work to funerals to weddings. It is similar to what Indian and other South Asian women wear known as the sari or saree. It’s a 4.5 m long wrap around garment that comes in silk, chiffon, cotton, Swiss, hafafa and other types of fabric. They could be plain or decorated with fabric paint, stones or gems, glitter, feathers or even tassels to wear at special occasions. The most popular toub that Sudanese women wear on their wedding day is toub al jirtik, a red toub decorated with gold ornaments and worn with traditional gold jewellery. It is worn at the traditional Sudanese wedding ceremony jirtik or jirtig, which is considered to be a good omen, bringing a prosperous and enduring married life.
Today, the Sudanese toub (teyab: plural) has become a fashion statement for Sudanese women with many becoming toub designers, adding their modern artistic twist or touch to the traditional garment. In recent years, teyab have become more colourful, glamorous and even more expensive, costing at least USD100.
