10 Top Universities in Sudan

The education system in Sudan was once the strongest and best in the Middle East and Africa region. Sudan’s continuous economic and political crisis has devastated the education sector. Sudan’s education sector struggles with low quality of education, lack of textbooks and other educational materials, poor infrastructure and insufficient data collection. Regardless, Sudan has a strong foundation for its education system that is yet to be developed and reach its full potential.

When it comes to higher education in Sudan, there are a variety of educational courses and programmes one can pursue. Tens of thousands graduate from Sudan’s colleges and universities every year to embark on careers in medicine, engineering, architecture, business and more. Sudan’s universities still attract students from all over the region for their quality of education as well as their affordability.

According to international university ranking websites (check references below), here are Sudan’s top 10 universities:

1. University of Khartoum (UofK) 

Established in 1956, University of Khartoum (UofK) is a public coeducational higher education university in Khartoum. UofK was originally founded as Gordon Memorial College in 1902 but was officially established as the University of Khartoum in 1956 at the same time Sudan gained independence. Officially accredited and recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the university has also branch campuses in Omdurman. UofK offers higher education degrees in medicine, pharmacy, science, architecture, arts, education, maths, engineering, management, agriculture and more. The largest and oldest university in Sudan was once one of the best universities in the Middle East and Africa region. However, it still remains a high-rank university in the region, attracting students from Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and more. The Sudan Library, based in the university, is Sudan’s national library.

2. Sudan University of Science and Technology (SUST)

Established in 1990, Sudan University of Science and Technology (SUST) is a public coeducational higher education university in Khartoum with branches in Bahri and Omdurman. Officially accredited and recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, SUST offers pre-bachelor and higher education degrees in science, computer science, technology, engineering, business, education, languages, music and drama, fine and applied art, and more. SUST was originally founded in 1950 as Khartoum Technical Institute (KTI) to graduate qualified technicians in the fields of buildings and commercial studies. In 1975, all technical institutes in Sudan were merged with KTI to form what was known as Khartoum Ploytechnique (KP). Then in 1990, the KP was transformed to Sudan University of Science and Technology, with all its institutions to colleges. 

3. University of Gezira (UofG)

Established in 1975, University of Gezira (UofG) is a public coeducational higher education university in Wad Medani, Al Jazira with branches in Alhasaheesa, Alhosh, Almanagil, Alkamlin and Alhideebah. UofG was the first university to be built outside of the capital Khartoum, near one of the biggest agricultural projects in Africa, the Gezira Scheme. The university is a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World. Officially accredited and recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, UofG offers pre-bachelor and higher education degrees in medicine, pharmacy, applied medical sciences, agriculture, animal production, health and environmental studies, textile, education and more.

4. International University of Africa (IUA)

Established in 1992, International University of Africa (IUA) is a public coeducational higher education university in Khartoum. Officially accredited and recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, IUA is a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World. The university was originally established in 1977 as the Islamic African Centre to train preachers and educate young African Muslims. In 1992, the government of President Omar Al-Bashir transformed the centre into a university. Islamic studies remains an important part of the curriculum. IUA offers pre-bachelor and higher education degrees in education and humanities, shariah and Islamic studies, applied sciences, engineering, medicine and more.

5. Neelain University

Established in 1993, Neelain University is a public coeducational higher education university in Khartoum. Officially accredited and recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Neelain University is a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World. Neelain University offers pre-bachelor and higher education degrees in medicine, engineering, science and technology, computer sciences and information technology, law, education, natural therapy, nursing sciences and more.

6. Ahfad University for Women (AUW) 

Established in 1966, Ahfad University for Women (AUW) is a women-only private higher education university in Omdurman. Officially accredited and recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, AUW has significant and rich history. It was originally established by Sheikh Babiker Badri (1860 – 1954) and his son, Professor Yousif Badri (1912-1995). Babiker Badri established the first secular school for girls in Sudan at Rufa’a in 1907. In 1951, the Ahfad Girls’ Intermediate School was established in Omdurman, and in 1955, Yousif Badri established the Ahfad Girls’ Secondary School, which later led to the establishment of Ahfad University College for Women in 1966. AUW offers officially recognised higher education degrees in management studies, health sciences, psychology, pre-school education, medicine, pharmacy, gender and development, business administration and more.

7. Red Sea University (RSU) 

Founded in 1995, Red Sea University (RSU) is a public coeducational higher education university in Port Sudan. It is a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World. Officially accredited and recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, RSU offers higher education degrees in marine science and fisheries, engineering, economy, education, medicine, science and Earth science.

8. University of Shendi (SHU)

Established in 1994, University of Shendi (SHU) is a public coeducational higher education university in Shendi in the River Nile State. Officially accredited and recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, offers officially recognised higher education degrees in education, community, archeology and tourism, computer science and information technology, public health, arts, economics, commerce and business administration.

9. Omdurman Ahlia University (OUA)

Established in 1986, Omdurman Ahlia University (OUA) is a private coeducational higher education university in Omdurman. It was originally founded on 1 November 1986 as Omdurman Ahlia College, but was then transformed into a university on 7 May 1995. Officially accredited and recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, OUA offers higher education degrees in applied sciences, computer science, engineering, architecture, medicine, medical laboratories, economics, administrative sciences, human development, environmental sciences and more.

10. Future University (FU)

Founded in 1991, Future University (FU), formerly known as Computer Man College, is a private coeducational higher education university in Khartoum. The university is one of the first educational institutions in Sudan to adopt the credit hours system in its education process. Officially accredited and recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Future University offers higher education degrees in telecommunications, business administration, information technology, computer science, architecture, engineering, arts and design, geo informatics and more.
