Nima Elbagir’s “Going Home: The War in Sudan” Receives News Emmy® Award

“Going Home: The War in Sudan” with Sudanese journalist Nima Elbagir from The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper received the Outstanding Investigative News Coverage: Long Form in the 45th Annual News and Documentary Emmy® Award competition, which took place on 25 September 2024 in New York City.   

The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper, is a CNN Original series, which featured an episode, “Going Home: The War in Sudan,” on 19 November 2023 with CNN Chief International Investigative Correspondent Nima Elbagir as she returns to her home country of Sudan to report on the civil war that’s torn her country apart and the role the Wagner group has played in this conflict. She has an emotional meeting with her remaining family members who haven’t fled yet.

CNN Worldwide received a new network-record for winning 11 News Emmy® Awards in the 45th Annual News and Documentary Emmy® Award competition.  The freshman season of The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper won five Emmy® awards, including Outstanding Recorded News Program.  

The London-based Sudanese-British journalist has racked up a variety of awards, including the Television Journalist of the Year award at Royal Television Society (RTS) Television Awards 2020, the 2019 Daniel Pearl Award for Courage and Integrity in Journalism, a duPoint Award, a Polk Award in 2017, the International Center for Journalists 2018 Excellence in International Reporting Award and the 2018 IWMF Courage in Journalism Award in October. New African magazine also named Elbagir as one of the ‘100 Most Influential Africans of the Year‘ in its December 2018 issue.

Elbagir was born in Sudan in 1978. She holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in philosophy from the London School of Economics (LSE). Her father is well-known journalist Ahmed Abdullah Elbagir, and her mother Ibtisam Affan was one of the first publishers in Sudan. The Elbagir family left Sudan and moved to the UK in the early 1980s. Her sister Yousra Elbagir is also a well-known journalist who writes for BBC Africa, BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service, CNN Africa, Financial Times and The Guardian.
