Bit Al Fasher: Sudan Mourns the Killing of Dr Hanadi Al Nour Daoud in Zamzam Camp

Dr Hanadi Al Nour Dawood, known as ‘Bit Al Fasher’, was killed on 13 April 2025 due to artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Zamzam Camp in Al Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur, while providing emergency medical care to victims.

According to the activist account on X (Twitter), Sudanese Echo, ‘Dr Hanadi was widely recognised for her bravery and relentless commitment to treating the wounded since the start of the attacks from the militia. Many described her as “a warrior in a doctor’s coat”, someone who moved fearlessly to the frontlines, armed with her courage and a deep belief in the justice of her cause. She ultimately gave her life on the battlefield, leaving behind a legacy defined by integrity and sacrifice. Her story has turned her into a national symbol and an inspiration to thousands across Sudan and beyond.’

According to the United Nations (UN), preliminary figures from local sources show more than 400 civilians were killed in fighting on 4 and 5 April 2025 around Zamzam and Abu Shouk displacement camps and the town of Al Fasher in North Darfur. This includes 10 humanitarian personnel from Relief International, who were killed while operating one of the last functioning health centres in Zamzam camp.

Al Fasher and much of the Darfur region is under the RSF’s siege amid the ongoing war in Sudan, which began on 15 April 2023 between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (RSF).

Located 15 km south of Al Fasher, Zamzam is one of the largest internally displaced persons camps in Sudan, housing approximately 500,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs). It was established in 2004 to accommodate the massive influx of people displaced by the war in Darfur that took place from 2003 to 2020. However, now, at least 400,000 people have been displaced from the camp after North Darfur has been taken over by the RSF.

Many took to social media to mourn the death of Dr Hanadi.

The Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA) announced the killing of Ahmed Mohamed Salih Sayidna, the manager of SAPA’s Hope Oasis Center for Children in Zamzam camp, following a shelling attack on Al Fasher by the RSF on 13 April 2025.
