Riek Machar, South Sudan’s inaugural Vice President, has tested positive for COVID-19 along with his wife, Minister of Defence Angelina Teny, and a number of his office staff and bodyguards, according to a statement posted on Monday, 19 May 2020 to press secretary James Gatdek Dak.
Dr Machar, 67, is also the deputy chairperson of the COVID-19 Task Force. The task force was tested on 13 May. The result came back positive for many members of the Task Force on Monday, 18 May.
Dr Machar is believed to be in good health with no symptoms. He and his wife will self-quarantine in his residence for the next 14 days. ‘We will be quarrying ourselves and the doctors will be visiting us until they tell us it’s time to unlock the quarantine,’ said Dr Machar on national TV, addressing the public. He added that those who are with him in his residence will also be tested as well.
Other members of the COVID-19 Task Force who’ve tested positive will also self-quarantine at their homes. ‘The colleagues that have been found positive are in good health,’ said Dr Machar.
According to the latest figures from South Sudan’s Ministry of Health, the number of COVID-19 cases in the country climbed to 347 with six deaths.
