Sudan Children’s Cancer Organization Launches Campaign to Renovate Sudan’s Only Paediatric Oncology Unit
Sudan Children’s Cancer Organization (SCCO) launched a campaign to renovate and expand Sudan’s only paediatric oncology unit at National Cancer Institute (NCI), which is currently under-resourced and overwhelmed.
Located in Wad Madani, NCI serves as a key institution in the fight against cancer in the region. At NCI, SCCO plans to establish Sudan’s first national paediatric cancer hub and expand capacity from 10 to 30 paediatric oncology beds. In addition, SCCO aims to provide diagnosis, chemotherapy, and essential supportive care, while building a lasting foundation of trained specialists and a resilient healthcare system.
The ongoing war in Sudan between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has devastated the healthcare system, making it nearly impossible for children with cancer to receive the care they need. Hospitals have been destroyed, medications are scarce, and medical professionals have fled for safety. According to SCCO, only 10 hospital beds are available for paediatric cancer patients across the entire country, and more than 500 children with cancer have been displaced from treatment centres.
In the midst of the ongoing war, SCCO continues to provide care, open treatment units, and work with global partners to ensure healthcare for children. To help save Sudan’s children battling cancer, SCCO is aiming to raise USD100,000 by 30 June 2025. Donations will go toward:
• Relocate 450+ displaced children to safe treatment
• Expand the only paediatric oncology unit from 10 to 30 beds
• Fund lifesaving cancer care for just USD13 per day per child
• Train the next generation of Sudan’s paediatric oncology specialists
• Create Sudan’s first dedicated critical care unit for children with cancer
The numbers behind the emergency:
• 27,382 new paediatric cancer cases each year
• 17,055 preventable child deaths annually
• 8–20% survival rate – far below the 85% norm
• USDD13.42 a day can sustain a child’s cancer care
SCCO is a US-based nonprofit committed to delivering life-saving cancer care and support to children in Sudan. In Sudan, ongoing conflict and a crumbling healthcare system make it nearly impossible for children with cancer to access the care they need. Hospitals have been destroyed, medications are scarce, and medical professionals are fleeing for safety. Yet in the face of this crisis, SCCO continues to deliver care, open treatment units, and coordinate with global partners to ensure no child is left behind.
