Sudan Reports 100 New COVID-19 Cases; 9,084 Total Cases and 559 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 100 new COVID-19 cases and three new deaths on Tuesday, 23 June 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 9,084 and the total number of deaths to 559.

The ministry also reported 106 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 3,912.

On 1 June, the Sovereign Council extended the partial lockdown imposed in Khartoum until 18 June 2020. On 14 June, Sudan announced that it will keep its airports closed to international and internal scheduled commercial flights for another two weeks until 28 June.

According to the ministry, out of the 100 newly reported cases, 38 are from Khartoum, 17 from El Gezira, 14 from Ash Shamaliyah, 10 from the River Nile, seven from West Kordofan, six from Kassala, five from the White Nile, two from the Red Sea and one from El Gadarif. Out of the three newly reported deaths, one is from El Gezira, one from Ash Shamaliyah, and one from the Red Sea.

Out of the total 9,084 positive cases in Sudan, 6,753 are from Khartoum, 864 from El Gezira, 242 from El Gadarif, 181 from Sennar, 170 from North Kordofan, 138 from the White Nile, 137 from North Darfur, 148 from the Red Sea, 123 from the River Nile, 93 from Kassala, 64 from Ash Shamaliyah, 41 from West Kordofan, 38 from South Darfur, 30 from West Darfur, 26 from the Blue Nile, 20 from East Darfur, 11 from South Kordofan and five from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from 19 May. On 1 June, the partial lockdown has been further extended to 18 June.

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
