Sudan Reports 118 New COVID-19 Cases; 8,698 Total Cases and 533 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 118 new COVID-19 cases and 12 new deaths on Friday, 19 June 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 8,698 and the total number of deaths to 533.

The ministry also reported 135 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 3,460.

On 1 June, the Sovereign Council extended the partial lockdown imposed in Khartoum until 18 June 2020. On 14 June, Sudan announced that it will keep its airports closed to international and internal scheduled commercial flights for another two weeks until 28 June.

According to the ministry, out of the 118 newly reported cases, 39 are from Khartoum, 35 from El Gezira, 30 from the Red Sea, seven from Kassala, four from Sennar, two from the Blue Nile, and one from Ash Shamaliyah. Out of the 12 newly reported deaths, five from the Red Sea, three from El Gezira, two from Khartoum, one from North Kordofan, and one from South Kordofan.

Out of the total 8,698 positive cases in Sudan, 6,538 are from Khartoum, 801 from El Gezira, 231 from El Gadarif, 172 from Sennar, 167 from North Kordofan, 131 from the White Nile, 128 from North Darfur, 128 from the Red Sea, 106 from the River Nile, 85 from Kassala, 49 from Ash Shamaliyah, 38 from South Darfur, 34 from West Kordofan, 28 from West Darfur, 26 from the Blue Nile, 20 from East Darfur, 11 from South Kordofan and five from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from 19 May. On 1 June, the partial lockdown has been further extended to 18 June.

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
