Sudan Reports 137 New COVID-19 Cases; 2,728 Total Cases and 111 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 137 new COVID-19 cases and six new deaths on Sunday, 17 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 2,728 and the total number of deaths to 111.

According to the ministry, out of the 137 newly reported cases, 99 are from Khartoum, 13 from Kassala, seven from El Gadarif, six from Sennar, five from Ash Shamaliyah, three from El Gezira, three from Red Sea and one from South Darfur. Out of the eight newly reported deaths, three are from Khartoum, two from El Gezira, one from each of the following states: El Gadarif, North Darfur and West Darfur.

The ministry also reported 39 new recoveries. To date, 286 have recovered.

Out of the total 2,728 positive cases in Sudan, 2,208 are from Khartoum, 143 from El Gezira, 88 from North Kordofan, 84 from El Gadarif, 66 from Sennar, 30 from Kassala, 25 from South Darfur, 14 from West Darfur, 13 from Ash Shamaliyah, 12 from North Darfur, 10 from River Nile, eight from White Nile, six from East Darfur, six from West Kordofan, six from Red Sea, four from Blue Nile, three from South Kordofan and two from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from Tuesday, 19 May.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors has closed with the exception of those in healthcare, and food and beverage. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

The Federal Ministry of Health recently launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
