Sudan Reports 149 New COVID-19 Cases; 6,879 Total Cases and 433 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 149 new COVID-19 cases and 20 new deaths on Wednesday, 10 June 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 6,879 and the total number of deaths to 433.

The ministry also reported 138 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,416.

On 1 June 2020, the Sovereign Council extended the partial lockdown imposed in Khartoum until 18 June 2020.

According to the ministry, out of the 149 newly reported cases, 67 are from Khartoum, 35 from El Gezira, 17 from the Red Sea, 16 from Sennar, 11 from North Darfur, and one from El Gadarif. Out of the 20 newly reported deaths, seven are from Khartoum, seven from El Gezira, four from the Red Sea, one from Sennar and one from Kassala.

Out of the total 6,879 positive cases in Sudan, 5,285 are from Khartoum, 612 from El Gezira, 185 from El Gadarif, 145 from North Kordofan, 144 from Sennar, 106 from North Darfur, 82 from the White Nile, 70 from the Red Sea, 59 from Kassala, 39 from the River Nile, 36 from South Darfur, 28 from West Darfur, 22 from Ash Shamaliyah, 19 from East Darfur, 19 from West Kordofan, 15 from the Blue Nile, seven from South Kordofan and four from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from 19 May. On 1 June, the partial lockdown has been further extended to 18 June.

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
