Sudan Reports 15th COVID-19 Case

The Federal Ministry of Health has confirmed the 15th case of COVID-19 in Sudan on Thursday, 9 April 2020.

The patient is a Sudanese man in his 40s who recently returned to Sudan from the UAE on 20 March 2020. According to the Minister of Health Dr Akram Al Toum, the patient reported his condition to health authorities on 6 April. He was tested and the results came back positive on 9 April. According to the minister, the patient is in good condition and is currently in quarantine and being treated in Jabra Hospital.

The Federal Ministry of Health is currently leading an investigation, compiling a full list of who came into contact with the patient.

With 88 beds, Jabra Hospital is receiving all COVID-19 cases including suspected, confirmed and severe cases that require ICU admission. The hospital also includes an isolation room. Two of the 15 COVID-19 patients in Sudan have died.

Three of the patients are non-Sudanese, one of whom has recovered and been released from quarantine.

The minister urged any passengers who came from the UAE on the same flight on 20 March and others who’ve recently returned from abroad since the airport briefly reopened last month to allow stranded passengers to return to call 9090 or 221. According to the minister, the ministry is unable to identify at least 40% of recent travelers due to the lack of accurate records of travelers at Khartoum International Airport.

There are at least 225 suspected cases. World Health Organization (WHO) has listed Sudan as a risk for a pandemic spread due to a lack of preparatory procedures and health facilities.

According to the minister, Sudan will soon apply a complete lockdown for three weeks.

The Federal Ministry of Health has launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221
