Sudan Reports 235 New COVID-19 Cases; 3,378 Total Cases and 137 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 235 new COVID-19 cases and 16 new deaths on Thursday, 21 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 3,378 and the total number of deaths to 137.

The newly reported number of deaths (16) is the highest number of deaths reported in Sudan, to date. The ministry also reported 63 new recoveries. To date, 372 have recovered.

According to the ministry, out of the 235 newly reported cases, 194 are from Khartoum, 26 from El Gezira, seven from El Gadarif, three from Sennar, two from the Blue Nile, one from Kassala, one from the White Nile and one from the Red Sea. Out of the 16 newly reported deaths, six are from North Kordofan, five from Khartoum, three from El Gezira, one from El Gadarif and one from the Blue Nile.

Out of the total 3,378 positive cases in Sudan, 2,748 are from Khartoum, 202 from El Gezira, 102 from El Gadarif, 95 from North Kordofan, 71 from Sennar, 34 from Kassala, 25 from South Darfur, 15 from River Nile, 16 from North Darfur, 14 from West Darfur, 13 from Ash Shamaliyah, 10 from White Nile, eight from East Darfur, nine from Red Sea, six from West Kordofan, five from Blue Nile, three from South Kordofan and two from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from Tuesday, 19 May. 

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors has closed with the exception of those in healthcare, and food and beverage. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

The Federal Ministry of Health recently launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
