Sudan Reports 256 New COVID-19 Cases; 3,628 Total Cases and 146 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 256 new COVID-19 cases and nine new deaths on Friday, 22 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 3,628 and the total number of deaths to 146.

According to the ministry, out of the 256 newly reported cases, 209 are from Khartoum, 18 from El Gezira, eight from North Kordofan, five from West Darfur, four from the White Nile, three from South Darfur, two from El Gadarif, two from West Kordofan, and one from each of the following states: Sennar, Kassala, North Darfur, the Blue Nile and the Red Sea. Out of the nine newly reported deaths, six are from Khartoum, two from El Gezira, and one from Kassala.

The ministry also reported 52 new recoveries. To date, 424 have recovered.

Out of the total 3,628 positive cases in Sudan, 2,957 are from Khartoum, 214 from El Gezira, 104 from El Gadarif, 103 from North Kordofan, 72 from Sennar, 35 from Kassala, 28 from South Darfur, 19 from West Darfur, 17 from North Darfur, 15 from River Nile, 14 from White Nile, 13 from Ash Shamaliyah, 10 from Red Sea, eight from East Darfur, eight from West Kordofan, six from Blue Nile, three from South Kordofan and two from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors has closed with the exception of those in healthcare, and food and beverage. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from Tuesday, 19 May. 

The Federal Ministry of Health recently launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
