Sudan Reports 325 New COVID-19 Cases; 2,289 Total Cases and 97 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 325 new COVID-19 cases and six new deaths on Friday, 15 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 2,289 and the total number of deaths to 97.

This is the highest reported number of cases in a single day in Sudan. According to the ministry, out of the 325 newly reported cases, 280 are from Khartoum, 15 from El Gezira, 10 from North Kordofan, eight from El Gadarif, four from Kassala, two from North Darfur, two from South Kordofan, two from Rive Nile, one from Ash Shamaliya and one from East Darfur. Out of the six newly reported deaths, two are from Khartoum, one from each of the following states: Kassala, North Darfur, Ash Shamaliya, and White Nile.

The ministry also reported 17 new recoveries. To date, 222 have recovered.

Out of the total 2,289 positive cases in Sudan, 1,874 are from Khartoum, 129 from El Gezira, 77 from North Kordofan, 70 from El Gadarif, 50 from Sennar, 19 from South Darfur, 17 from Kassala, 10 from River Nile, eight from Ash Shamaliyah, seven from North Darfur, six from East Darfur, four from West Kordofan, four from White Nile, four from West Darfur, three from Red Sea, three from South Kordofan, two from Central Darfur and one from Blue Nile. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government also announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors are closed for three weeks with the exception of those in the healthcare, and food and beverage sectors. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

The Federal Ministry of Health recently launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
