Sudan Reports 410 New COVID-19 Cases; 3,138 Total Cases and 121 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 410 new COVID-19 cases and 10 new deaths on Wednesday, 20 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 3,138 and the total number of deaths to 121.

The new report is a culmination of reports from Monday 18 May, Tuesday 19 May, and Wednesday 20 May 2020. Prior to 20 May, the last report released by the Federal Ministry of Health of Sudan was on Sunday, 17 May.

According to the ministry, out of the 410 newly reported cases, 345 are from Khartoum, 27 from El Gezira, 10 from El Gadarif, seven from North Kordofan, four from North Darfur, three from East Darfur, three from Kassala, two from Red Sea, two from White Nile and one from Sennar. Out of the 10 newly reported deaths, five are from Khartoum, three from El Gezira, and two from El Gadarif.

The ministry also reported 23 new recoveries. To date, 309 have recovered.

Out of the total 3,138 positive cases in Sudan, 2,553 are from Khartoum, 170 from El Gezira, 95 from North Kordofan, 94 from El Gadarif, 67 from Sennar, 33 from Kassala, 25 from South Darfur, 16 from River Nile, 16 from North Darfur, 14 from West Darfur, 13 from Ash Shamaliyah, 10 from White Nile, nine from East Darfur, eight from Red Sea, six from West Kordofan, four from Blue Nile, three from South Kordofan and two from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from Tuesday, 19 May. 

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors has closed with the exception of those in healthcare, and food and beverage. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

The Federal Ministry of Health recently launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
