Vogue Arabia, the Arab-edition of the monthly American fashion and lifestyle Vogue magazine, features a Sudanese wedding for the first time.

The wedding is that of Sudanese-American designer Eilaf Osman, founder of EILAF, a luxury handbag and accessories brand, and recipient of the FTA Accessories Winner 2022, to Chad-based Sudanese geophysics engineer Saddam Mahamat Moussa Hileo. The luxury wedding took place on 27 January 2024 at the One & Only Palm in Dubai, the UAE.

‘What an honor and dear thanks to @voguearabia for sharing our special day and Sudanese customs to the world. This is the first time a Sudanese wedding is being featured on Vogue’s platform and I just wanted to share with the world the incredible customs and traditions Sudanese people hold dear to their culture as we are being forced to keep our spirit alive far from our homeland due to the active war happening. We are a people of love, happiness, and family and I hope that once the war is over we can go back to our joyous celebrations in our grandmothers’ lands,’ said Eilaf on her Instagram.

Telling Vogue Arabia about their love story, Eilaf says she met Saddam in Chad after the war broke out in Sudan. She travel to Chad to help her displaced weavers that make her brand’s popular DOM Basket Bag move across the border, resettle in N’Djamena, and continue basket weaving. There she met Saddam and a month later, Saddam proposed with a 21 carat gold ring.

The wedding kicked off with a wedding ceremony where bride wore a romantic lace-detailed Justin Alexander Signature Collection gown and the groom opted for a classic Tom Ford tuxedo. Later, the traditional Sudanese ceremony, known as the jirtig/jirtik, took place, featuring popular Sudanese singer Eman El Shareef.
