Defence Minister Gamal Al Din Omar Dies of Heart Attack in South Sudan

Defence minister, General Gamal Al Din Omar, has died of a heart attack on Wednesday, 25 March 2020 while on an official visit in South Sudan.

He was in the capital city of Juba, partaking in peace negotiations between Sudan’s transitional Sovereign Council and rebel groups.

Omar was a member of the ruling Sovereign Council, which took power in August 2019 after Sudan’s nearly nine-month revolution led to the ousting of former Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir. Led by Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, the Sovereign Council consists of six civilians and five military members, who will rule the country for three years and three months until democratic elections are held in 2022.

He has been laid to rest in Farouq Cemetery in Khartoum on Wednesday, 24 March 2020. Members of the Sovereign Council as well as other government figures were in attendance.

Members of the Sovereign Council, the former Transitional Military Council (TMC), and the Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC) have mourned his loss.
