Sudan Reports 91 New COVID-19 Cases; 533 Total Cases and 36 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 91 new COVID-19 cases and five new deaths on Friday, 1 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 533 and the total number of deaths to 36.

This is the highest recorded number of reported cases in a single day in Sudan. According to the ministry, out of the 91 newly reported cases, 71 are from Khartoum, three from North Kordofan, six from Sennar, three from El Gezira and two from River Nile State, one from North Darfur and one from El Gadarif. Out of the five newly reported deaths, three are from Khartoum and two are from El Gezira.

According to the ministry, out of the total 533 positive cases in Sudan, 474 are from Khartoum, 24 from El Gezira, eight from Sennar, eight from North Kordofan, five from El Gadarif, five from River Nile, two from West Kordofan and one from each of the following states: White Nile, Red Sea, East Darfur, South Darfur and Central Darfur. To date, 46 have recovered.

The Federal Ministry of Health recently launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

Sudan’s capital Khartoum is currently on a three-week lockdown, which began on 18 April 2020. It allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors are closed for three weeks with the exception of those in the healthcare, and food and beverage sectors. On Friday, 24 April 2020, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
