Elhag further criticised the delegation of senior Sudanese officials, including the deputy leader of the military-led ruling council, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), for heading to Russia for talks on cooperation.
In another video posted later that day, Elhag stated that he is on a train, leaving Kharkiv to the capital city of Ukraine, Kyiv, where he plans to travel and seek refuge in Poland.
Following Elhag’s viral video, on 26 February 2022, Sudan News Agency (SUNA) stated that Sudan will evacuate Sudanese nationals stranded in Ukraine through Poland and Romania. According to the Sudanese Embassy in Kyiv, Polish authorities have allowed Sudanese nationals in Ukraine to leave through its territories.
The Russian Federation and Ukraine are currently in a state of war. The Russo-Ukrainian War began in 2014 following the Russian annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine as President Vladimir Putin demanded Kyiv’s army lay down its weapons. The US, EU and Western allies have ramped up sanctions against Russia, targeting banks, oil refineries, and military exports.
