Sudan Animal Rescue Launches Emergency Appeal

Sudan Animal Rescue, the country’s first animal shelter, has launched an emergency appeal, calling for urgent aid help relocate their animals outside of Khartoum, due to the ongoing fighting in Sudan.

On 15 April 2023, fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) broke out, leaving more than 500 people dead, more than 3,000 injured, and more than 1 million people fleeing Sudan to neighbouring countries.

Sudan Animal Rescue is home to more than 30 animals. Currently, 24 lions, five hyenas, five wildcats, and many more birds and reptiles are in danger due to the ongoing fighting in Sudan.

In a post published by Sudan Animal Rescue on their social media channels on 8 June 2023, they said, ‘Over the past two months, Sudan Animal Rescue has diligently continued its operations amidst the challenging circumstances of a nation at war. However, the risks and hardships that our team and animals have faced during this period have become increasingly unmanageable. The lack of water, electricity and safe roads has severely hampered our ability to ensure the necessary care, maintenance, and supplies for our animals. Considering the immense challenges we face and the paramount importance we place on the well-being of our animals, we see no option, but to relocate our animals until the city achieves a stable and secure environment’.

Sudan Animal Rescue stated that they have applied and received the necessary paperwork for the relocation of the animals, and have quotations for the fabrication of their cages and transport.

‘We urgently seek everyone’s support to help us protect our precious animals. Please help by…writing to animal welfare organisations and donating what you can to help us with our ongoing costs for food and expenses,’ the post concluded.

The animal shelter was established in 2020 by Osman Salih after witnessing the plight of the malnourished lions and other animals at Al Qurashi Park. He rescued those animals and more, and in process, set up Sudan Animal Rescue Centre, which located along Madani Street in Al Bageir. Today, the shelter is home to several rescued animals including lions, hyenas, dogs, birds, snakes and more.
