Sudan and South Sudan at the Paris 2024 Olympics

Sudanese and South Sudanese athletes will be participating in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, officially branded as the Paris 2024 Olympics, from 26 July to 11 August 2024, representing their respective countries in various sports.

The Summer Olympics is a major international multi-sport event normally held once every four years usually in July and/or August.

Sudan is scheduled to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics. It will be the country’s 13th appearance at the Summer Olympics.

Three Sudanese athletes will represent Sudan at the Paris 2024 Olympics  – Rana Saadeldin will be competing in the Women’s 100 m freestyle; Ziyad Saleem will be competing in the Men’s 100 m backstroke, and Yaseen Abdalla will be competing in the Men’s marathon.

The Sudan Olympic Committee has been instrumental in providing support, training facilities, and coaching expertise to nurture talent and foster a conducive environment for athletic development. The Sudan Olympic Committee was recognised in 1959 with Ahmed Abuelgasim Hashim as president.

South Sudan is scheduled to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics, which would be the young country’s third appearance at the Summer Olympics, since its debut in 2016.

South Sudan will compete in the men’s Olympic basketball tournament for the first time in history when they take to the court on 28 July at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The South Sudan Basketball Federation was only established in 2011 and became a member of International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in 2013, and played their first official game in 2017 (an 87-76 loss to Egypt).

The Bright Stars have already made huge strides in their 12 years of existence by reaching the quarter-finals of FIBA AfroBasket 2021 and then qualifying for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, where they earned qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics as the highest-placed African team at the tournament (finishing 17th).

The South Sudan National Olympic Committee was recognised in 2015 with Juma Stephen Lugga Lemi as president.
