The Sudanese Creators for Change

On 12 November 2018, Creators for Change Ambassadors and Fellows, representing countries from around the world, dropped their individual YouTube Creators for Change short films at the same time. These films tackle a wide range of topics from identity and self-acceptance to celebrating cultures and advocating for global empathy.

From Sudan, Maha AJ and Muaz Osman dropped their Creators for Change short films, which quickly went viral amongst Sudanese communities around the world. Maha AJ and Muaz Osman are the first and only two Sudanese Creators for Change Ambassadors and Fellows.

“Salimmik – A Love Letter to Sudan”

Maha AJ’s “Salimmik – A Love Letter to Sudan” is a hip hop music video paying homage to Sudan. The music video portrays breathtaking scenes of Sudan and its culture, featuring different Sudanese music genres including rap, daluka and zanig with performances by rapper Loay Flippter and keyboardist Nigeri. Her positive message and view is to celebrate and connect cultures!

Maha AJ also makes an appearance in Fly With Hafia’s Creators for Change video, “Stereotype World: The Middle East Speaks Up“, when she gives a shout out to Sudanese women.

“They Can’t Stop You”

Muaz Osman’s “They Can’t Stop You” tells the stories of young Sudanese men and women such as judo champion Amro Mohamed Elamin, basket player Asmaa Elbadawi, body builder Ahmed Yasir, graffiti artist Assil Diab, equestrian champion Yasmin Elnager and freestyle footballer Abdullah Emad, who have achieved their goals despite the challenges and odds stacked against them. His positive message and view is to dream big!

What is Creators for Change?

YouTube Creators for Change launched in 2017 as an ongoing global initiative that spotlights inspirational creators who use YouTube to foster productive conversations around tough issues and make a positive impact on the world.

Creators for Change is a global programme that thrives through its many local chapters. From providing education on the dangers of fake news, to helping create safe spaces for making content that addresses hate speech, these chapters empower thousands of young people to drive positive social change across Europe, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region.

As part of the programme, YouTube partners with YouTubers from around the world who use their platforms to promote positive message to their millions of subscribers. YouTube partnered with these inspired creators to develop video Impact Projects that aim to bring people together and increasing tolerance and understanding. As a result, these YouTubers become Creators for Change Ambassadors and Fellows who receive mentorship and promotional support to aid the creation of their Impact Projects.

Who is Maha AJ?

Maha Jaafar (Maha AJ) is a YouTuber, comedian and dentist based in the UAE. She suddenly found fame in 2016 after her very first video, which was a collection of impressions she did of different Arabic dialects, got over 1.8 million views online, setting off on her YouTube journey. Being of half-Sudanese and half-Iraqi, Maha’s goal is to promote and showcase love and unity between cultures through comedy and laughter. Today, Maha AJ has over 344,480 YouTube subscribers. 

Who is Muaz Osman?

Muaz Osman is a YouTuber and filmmaker based in Sudan. He started his YouTube channel in 2013, discussing social, economical and even political issues impacting Sudanese society today. He later created “Ratinah” in 2016, which is a YouTube show with a series of interviews with young Sudanese artists about their beginnings, achievements, dreams and more. Today, Muaz Osman has over 132,000 YouTube subscribers.
