Daniel Caesar’s New Music Video for “Toronto 2014” Features Clips from Sudan

Canadian R&B singer and songwriter Daniel Caesar released the official music video of his new song, “Toronto 2014”, on 30 May 2023, featuring Sudanese-Canadian poet, singer, songwriter Mustafa The Poet and clips of their trip to Sudan in December 2022.

In the music video, Caesar is seen wearing a jalabiya, the traditional white Sudanese clothing for men, on the deserts of Sudan. The song is from Caesar’s new and third studio album Never Enough, which was released through Republic on 7 April 2023, two days after his 28th birthday. The 28-year-old Grammy-winning singer and songwriter has produced hits such as Best Part featuring H.E.R, Get You featuring Kali Uchis and more.

The Poet shared a clip of the music video on his Instagram saying, ‘Toronto 2014 video out now. Go find it on YouTube. Got to travel the world with a few of my friends. I am eternally grateful for the life I lead. I will never stop striving for more but upon further reflection. I can’t help but come to the conclusion that it is in fact, enough’. Caesar commented, ‘Prayers to Sudan. It was a pleasure to experience that place when we did’.

Caesar will be donating some of the revenue from the video to the Sudan Relief Fund, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to bringing basic necessities such as food, water, clothing, shelter and medical aid to Sudanese people affected by ongoing fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Caesar and The Poet visited Sudan in December 2023 with French-Alegrian model Younes Bendjima, American singer and songwriter Omar Apollo, South Sudanese-American model Anok Yai and other celebrities for unknown reasons. Bendjima posted videos on his stories about their trip in Sudan with appearances of Caesar, Apollo and The Poet. Bendjima and Yai posted stories on Instagram of the group on a boat trip on the Nile River. Later, Bendjima posted a story on Instagram of the group at a cafe, watching the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Semi-Final of Argentina vs Croatia (3-0).

Many believed that the group visited to Sudan with Mustafa The Poet who was visiting Sudan for the first time with his family. However, he kept a low profile and has not shared or posted anything of about his visit to Sudan on social media. However, on 13 December 2022, The Poet posted a story on Instagram, announcing that he and Yai are hosting an event on the day at the House of Heritage to have a conversation on diaspora, community and their first time returning home. Entry was only USD1 with the proceeds going to charity, and the first 150 people to attend entered for free.
