Eid Al Fitr Commences on Sunday, 30 March in Sudan and South Sudan

Sudan and South Sudan have announced that the first day of Eid Al Fitr, known as the Festival of Breaking the Fast, will begin in each respective country on Sunday, 30 March 2025.

Both Sudan and South began observing the holy month of Ramadan on 1 March 2025.

Eid Al Fitr in 2025 is expected to begin on March 30 or 31, depending on the sighting of the moon, as is customary with Islamic holidays such as Ramadan and Eid Al Adha. The sighting of the Shawwal crescent officially marks the end of Ramadan and the start of the three-day Eid Al Fitr celebration, determined by Moon Sighting Committees worldwide on the 29th night of Ramadan.

However, in Egypt, Ethiopia, Chad, and the Central African Republic (CAR), where many Sudanese refugees and displaced persons reside, Eid Al Fitr will begin on 31 March. Meanwhile, in countries such as Rwanda and Uganda, Eid Al Fitr is set to begin on 30 March.

Other countries celebrating Eid Al Fitr on 30 March: Saudi Arabic, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Morocco, Spain, France, US, Canada, the UK, etc.

Other countries celebrating Eid Al Fitr on 31 March: Australia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Oman, Brunei, Malaysia, etc.

This year, most countries are observing the first day of Eid Al Fitr on 31 March, after completing 30 days of Ramadan. However, some countries, begin the celebration on 30 March, after completing 29 days of Ramadan.

Eid Al Fitr is the first of the two main Eids or festivals in Islam – the other being Eid Al Adha. Falling on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar, the three-day festival marks the end of Ramadan and of the month-long dawn-to-dusk fasting (sawm) of Ramadan.
