Sudan Reports 100 New COVID-19 Cases; 8,416 Total Cases and 513 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 100 new COVID-19 cases and seven new deaths on Wednesday, 17 June 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 8,416 and the total number of deaths to 513.

The ministry also reported 118 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 3,204.

On 1 June, the Sovereign Council extended the partial lockdown imposed in Khartoum until 18 June 2020. On 14 June, Sudan announced that it will keep its airports closed to international and internal scheduled commercial flights for another two weeks until 28 June.

According to the ministry, out of the 100 newly reported cases, 32 are from Khartoum, 21 from El Gezira, 14 from the White Nile, 10 from West Kordofan, eight from Ash Shamaliyah, three from Sennar, three from North Kordofan, two from the Blue Nile, two from South Kordofan, two from El Gadarif, one from the River Nile, one from East Darfur and one from Central Darfur. Out of the seven newly reported deaths, four from El Gezira and two from Khartoum.

Out of the total 8,416 positive cases in Sudan, 6,392 are from Khartoum, 759 from El Gezira, 224 from El Gadarif, 162 from Sennar, 158 from North Kordofan, 128 from North Darfur, 128 from the White Nile, 98 from the Red Sea, 91 from the River Nile, 78 from Kassala, 43 from Ash Shamaliyah, 38 from South Darfur, 28 from West Darfur, 32 from West Kordofan, 22 from the Blue Nile, 20 from East Darfur, 10 from South Kordofan and five from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from 19 May. On 1 June, the partial lockdown has been further extended to 18 June.

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
