Sudan Reports 161 New COVID-19 Cases; 6,242 Total Cases and 372 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 161 new COVID-19 cases and 13 new deaths on Saturday, 6 June 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 6,242 and the total number of deaths to 372.

The ministry also reported 45 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,059.

On 1 June 2020, the Sovereign Council extended the partial lockdown imposed in Khartoum until 18 June 2020.

According to the ministry, out of the 161 newly reported cases, 132 are from Khartoum, 16 from El Gezira, nine from North Darfur, three from East Darfur and one from South Darfur. Out of the 13 newly reported deaths, nine are from Khartoum, two from the River Nile, one from Sennar and one from North Darfur.

Out of the total 6,242 positive cases in Sudan, 4,868 are from Khartoum, 513 from El Gezira, 177 from El Gadarif, 143 from North Kordofan, 128 from Sennar, 85 from North Darfur, 72 from the White Nile, 53 from Kassala, 36 from South Darfur, 33 from the River Nile, 28 from the Red Sea, 26 from West Darfur, 20 from Ash Shamaliyah, 19 from East Darfur, 16 from West Kordofan, 15 from the Blue Nile, six from South Kordofan and four from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from 19 May. On 1 June, the partial lockdown has been further extended to 18 June.

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
