Sudan Reports 175 New COVID-19 Cases; 4,521 Total Cases and 233 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 175 new COVID-19 cases and 38 new deaths on Wednesday, 27 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 4,521 and the total number of deaths to 233.

The newly reported number of deaths (38) is the highest number of deaths reported in Sudan, to date. The ministry also reported 67 new recoveries. To date, 816 have recovered.

According to the ministry, out of the 175 newly reported cases, 128 are from Khartoum, 20 from North Darfur, 16 from El Gezira, five from El Gadarif, four from the White Nile, one from Ash Shamaliyah and one from the River Nile. Out of the 38 newly reported deaths, 13 from North Darfur, 11 from Khartoum, seven from El Gezira, two from Ash Shamaliyah, two from East Darfur, one from El Gadarif, one from West Darfur, and one from the White Nile.

Out of the total 4,521 positive cases in Sudan, 3,597 are from Khartoum, 301 from El Gezira, 139 from El Gadarif, 124 from North Kordofan, 98 from Sennar, 52 from North Darfur, 37 from Kassala, 34 from South Darfur, 33 from White Nile, 23 from West Darfur, 17 from the River Nile, 15 from Ash Shamaliyah, 14 from East Darfur, 10 from Red Sea, 10 from West Kordofan, eight from Blue Nile, six from South Kordofan and three from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors has closed with the exception of those in healthcare, and food and beverage. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from Tuesday, 19 May. 

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
