Sudan Reports 279 New COVID-19 Cases; 4,800 Total Cases and 262 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 279 new COVID-19 cases and 29 new deaths on Thursday, 28 May and Friday, 29 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 4,800 and the total number of deaths to 262.

The ministry also reported 457 new recoveries. To date, 1,272 have recovered.

According to the ministry, out of the 279 newly reported cases, 197 are from Khartoum, 34 from El Gezira, 12 from El Gadarif, 10 from Sennar, 10 from the White Nile, nine from North Darfur, three from Kassala, one from each of the following states: South Darfur, West Darfur, Central Darfur, West Kordofan, and the River Nile. Out of the 29 newly reported deaths, 20 are from Khartoum, seven from El Gezira, one from Sennar, and one from Central Darfur.

Out of the total 4,800 positive cases in Sudan, 3,794 are from Khartoum, 335 from El Gezira, 151 from El Gadarif, 124 from North Kordofan, 104 from Sennar, 61 from North Darfur, 43 from the White Nile, 40 from Kassala, 35 from South Darfur, 24 from West Darfur, 17 from the River Nile, 15 from Ash Shamaliyah, 14 from East Darfur, 11 from West Kordofan, 10 from Red Sea, eight from the Blue Nile, six from South Kordofan and four from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors has closed with the exception of those in healthcare, and food and beverage. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from Tuesday, 19 May. 

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
