A Sudanese woman has given birth to quadruplets in Al Gedaref State in southeastern Sudan, reported Al Arabiya news on 5 January 2025.
After 40 days of labour and delivery, an unnamed Sudanese woman delivered three girls and a boy at one birth in Al Taahil Hospital for Women and Obstetrics (Rehabilitation Hospital for Women and Obstetrics). Dr Bashir Mohammed Tahir, an obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) doctor and consultant, oversaw the complicated yet successful delivery of the quadruplets via caesarean section (C-section) at the Gadarif Surgical Clinic. Both the mother and her babies are well. Originally, she gave birth to quintuplets (five babies), but only four survived.

A rare case in the world and in Sudan, quadruplets is when four children are born at one birth. There are only a few documented births of quadruplets by Sudanese women. Recently, only two have been reported: in 2008 and 2003.
In 2018, a Sudanese woman gave birth to premature quintuplets in a hospital in Omdourman. However, 30 hours after their birth, all five babies failed to survive.
Due to the ongoing war in Sudan that began on 15 April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), children in Sudan are suffering from a malnutrition crisis, in addition to the prevalence of other diseases, including diarrhoea, infections, malaria and kala-azar, a disease transmitted by sandfly bites, and targets the immune system, proving fatal if not swiftly addressed – all contributing to an overwhelming demand for medical attention.
According to ReliefWeb, since the war began, Khartoum’s single malnutrition paste factory was destroyed, halting the production of the crucial ‘Plumpy Nut’ paste that plays a pivotal role in combating food insecurity for Sudanese children.
According to ReliefWeb, urgent measures are imperative, including the prompt supply of convulsive treatments, Valium, therapeutic dairy products, intravenous solutions, antiviral therapies, and vital technical assistance to aid numerous children and families.
