On 29 July 2019, paramilitary forces have fired tear gas and ammunition at demonstrators during protests against fuel and bread shortages in El-Obeid, the capital city of the state of North Kordofan, killing of at least five people, including four school students aged between 15 and 17 years. At least 62 people have been injured.

Protests erupted across Sudan on 29 and 30 July 2019, following the killings in El-Obeid. Hundreds of schoolchildren in Khartoum and other cities of Sudan, dressed in their school uniforms, took to the streets to protest against the killings in El-Obeid.

The ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC) has condemned the killing and ordered all schools in the country shut for an indefinite period. However, the paramilitary forces are headed by TMC’s Deputy Head, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti).

Prior to the killings in El-Obeid, hundreds of people have rallied across Sudan to demand an independent investigation into a deadly raid on 3 June 2019 where paramilitary forces raided the monthslong mass sit-in in Al Qeyada in front of the headquarters of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), killing at least 120 people and injuring more than 300.

Protest leaders have called off planned talks with the TMC. The Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) have called on another ‘Millions March’ on Thursday, 1 August 2019.
