Sudan Reports 53 New COVID-19 Cases; 1,164 Total Cases and 64 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 53 new COVID-19 cases and five new deaths on Saturday, 9 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 1,164 and the total number of deaths to 64.

According to the ministry, out of the 53 newly reported cases, 42 are from Khartoum, five from El Gadarif, four from North Kordofan, one from North Darfur and one from South Kordofan. Out of the five newly reported deaths, two are from Khartoum and three from El Gezira.

The ministry also reported 17 new recoveries. To date, 119 have recovered.

Out of the total 1,164 positive cases in Sudan, 976 are from Khartoum, 45 from El Gezira, 42 from North Kordofan, 31 from El Gadarif, 20 from Sennar, 16 from South Darfur, seven from River Nile, seven from Ash Shamaliyah, five from West Kordofan, five from North Darfur, two from West Darfur, two from East Darfur, two from White Nile, one from Red Sea, one from Central Darfur and one from Kassala. To date, there are 17 states with COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

On Friday, 8 May, the Sudanese government also announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors are closed for three weeks with the exception of those in the healthcare, and food and beverage sectors. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

The Federal Ministry of Health recently launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
