Sudan Reports 161 New COVID-19 Cases; 1,526 Total Cases and 74 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 161 new COVID-19 cases and four new deaths on Monday, 11 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 1,526 and the total number of deaths to 74.

According to the ministry, out of the 161 newly reported cases, 100 are from Khartoum, 20 from North Kordofan, 12 from El Gadarif, nine from El Gezira, seven from Sennar, five from Kassala, two from White Nile, two from West Darfur, one from Central Darfur, one from River Nile, one from the Red Sea, and one from South Kordofan. Out of the four newly reported deaths, two are from El Gezira, one from Khartoum and one from White Nile.

The ministry also reported 12 new recoveries. To date, 161 have recovered.

Out of the total 1,526 positive cases in Sudan, 1,249 are from Khartoum, 64 from El Gezira, 62 from North Kordofan, 44 from El Gadarif, 42 from Sennar, 17 from South Darfur, nine from River Nile, seven from Ash Shamaliyah, six from Kassala, five from West Kordofan, five from North Darfur, four from White Nile, four from West Darfur, two from East Darfur, two from Red Sea, two from Central Darfur and one from Blue Nile. To date, all of Sudan’s 18 states have COVID-19 cases.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government also announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors are closed for three weeks with the exception of those in the healthcare, and food and beverage sectors. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

The Federal Ministry of Health recently launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
