Sudan Reports 146 New COVID-19 Cases; 1,964 Total Cases and 91 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 146 new COVID-19 cases and one new death on Thursday, 14 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 1,964 and the total number of deaths to 91.

According to the ministry, out of the 164 newly reported cases, 120 are from Khartoum, 10 from El Gadarif, seven from Kassala, six from El Gezira, three from East Darfur and one from Sennar. The one newly reported death is from Khartoum.

The ministry also reported seven new recoveries. To date, 205 have recovered.

Out of the total 1,964 positive cases in Sudan, 1,594 are from Khartoum, 113 from El Gezira, 67 from North Kordofan, 64 from El Gadarif, 49 from Sennar, 19 from South Darfur, 13 from Kassala, eight from River Nile, seven from Ash Shamaliyah, five from West Kordofan, five from North Darfur, five from East Darfur, four from White Nile, four from West Darfur, three from Red Sea, two from Central Darfur, one from Blue Nile, and one from South Kordofan. All of Sudan’s 18 states have COVID-19 cases.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government also announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors are closed for three weeks with the exception of those in the healthcare, and food and beverage sectors. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

The Federal Ministry of Health recently launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
