Sudan Reports 151 New COVID-19 Cases; 5,865 Total Cases and 347 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 151 new COVID-19 cases and 14 new deaths on Thursday, 4 June 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 5,865 and the total number of deaths to 347.

The ministry also reported 99 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,924.

On 1 June 2020, the Sovereign Council extended the partial lockdown imposed in Khartoum until 18 June 2020.

According to the ministry, out of the 151 newly reported cases, 91 are from Khartoum, 41 from El Gezira, eight from North Darfur, four from the Blue Nile, four from the Red Sea, two from El Gadarif and one form Kassala. Out of the 14 newly reported deaths, seven are from North Darfur, five from Khartoum and two from El Gezira.

Out of the total 5,865 positive cases in Sudan, 4,571 are from Khartoum, 481 from El Gezira, 172 from El Gadarif, 140 from North Kordofan, 122 from Sennar, 76 from North Darfur, 67 from the White Nile, 53 from Kassala, 35 from South Darfur, 26 from West Darfur, 25 from the River Nile, 20 from Ash Shamaliyah, 22 from Red Sea, 16 from East Darfur, 15 from the Blue Nile, 14 from West Kordofan, six from South Kordofan and four from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from 19 May. On 1 June, the partial lockdown has been further extended to 18 June.

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
