Singer Balqees Fathi Performs in Sudan for the First Time in Eid Al Fitr

The popular UAE-based Yemeni singer Balqees Ahmed Fathi performed in Sudan for the very first time in Eid Al Fitr on 7 May 2022. She is the first Khaleeji female singer to perform in Sudan.

On Twitter, Balqees tweeted: “My dear people of Sudan, I promised you to visit, and as I promised, I will meet you on 7 May during Eid and summer parties. I love you so much.”

Balqees has a huge fan base in Sudan, often performing the popular Sudanese song, “Sharee’e Al Nile” or “Nile Street” by Sudanese singer Shukrallah Azaldeen in her concerts in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Balqees is scheduled to present a number of her songs that she presented recently, such as “Entaha”, “Mumkan”, “Dodom”, “Jabbar”, Ya Aunt”, and also her new hit song “Eid Came”.

Her concert was organised by Elegant Event, run by Zainab Elnour, at the five-star hotel, Corinthia Khartoum. Balqees performed wearing two traditional Sudanese clothing known as toub designed by Lamya Hashim, which was very welcomed and celebrated by many. She also danced to Sudanese music. The ladies-only concert, which included a fashion show of teyab, the plural of toub, was sold out. She shared many clips of her trip to Sudan on social media, celebrating her visit to Sudan, saying it’s her “second home country”.

Although her visit to Sudan and performance were celebrated by many, there were also those who were disappointed by her performance as well as her comments about Sudan and its people being “simple”. She has since deleted that video. In addition, others criticised the price of the tickets, which cost USD100 to USD200, at a time when the country is suffering from a dire economic and political crisis. There were also rumors that the electricity went out during the concert.

Balqees has tweeted, saying that she will return to perform in Sudan again at the Nile Club with tickets at more affordable prices.

Although concerts are quite common in Sudan, they are mostly by Sudanese singers. Arab and international singers rarely perform live in Sudan. In the 1060s, the late, legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum was one of the first and few Arab singers to perform in Sudan. She even wore a toub while performing.

Most recently, Sudan has seen performances by Egyptian singer Sherine Abdel-Wahab, Iraqi singer Kadim Al Sahir, English singer Joss Stone and American rapper Silento. In addition, Syrian singer Asalah Nasri held her first performance ever in Sudan in 2003 at a private wedding. Her performance was the first in the past 16 years.
