COVID-19 Cases in Sudan Jump to 29

The Federal Ministry of Health has announced 10 new COVID-19 cases in Sudan on Monday, 13 April 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country to 29. The ministry has also announced two new deaths, bringing the total number of COVID-19 deaths in Sudan to four.

This is the highest recorded number of reported cases in a single day in Sudan.

According to Health Minister Dr Akram Al Toum, at least five of the 10 cases are a result of local transmission, having had contact with other COVID-19 cases. One of the ten cases has been reported in River Nile State. The remaining nine are within Khartoum State in Umbada, El Fitehab, Al Taif and other localities. Their ages range from 23 to 72.

According to the minister, there is currently a shortage of medical resources and equipment including tests, masks and gloves to fight the spread of the pandemic. According to Reuters, the minister said that Sudan urgently needs USD120 million to fight the spread of COVID-19.

The minister urges people in Sudan to avoid public gatherings, practice social distancing and to report any suspected cases to 9090.

The Minister of Culture and Information, Faisal Mohamed Saleh, has announced a complete lockdown for three weeks in the capital city of Khartoum, starting Saturday, 18 April 2020. Majority of the private and public sectors will close for three weeks with the exception of those in the healthcare, and food and beverage sectors. All businesses will work until Thursday, 16 April to prepare for the lockdown.
