Heavy Rainfall Devastate Sudan

Floods triggered by heavy rains have left at least 46 people dead, including two children, across Sudan in the last two weeks.

Th heavy rainfall has affected 12 of the country’s 18 states. The most affected states are Khartoum, Al Jazira, White Nile and Darfur. Power outages have also hit several of these states.

According to the Sudanese Ministry of Health, a total of 9,260 houses collapsed, of which 595 entirely and 3,317 partially, 154 places in 25 localities have been affected by the rains, at least 1,606 heads of livestock were lost, and 127 public facilities, including mosques, schools, health centres, and other government institutions, have been affected.

On 13 August 2019, the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) stated heavy rainfall has caused floods that damaged more than 1,000 homes in the outskirts of Khartoum. It called on the public to volunteer and donate to rescue missions.

Nafeer, a youth-led volunteer campaign which works on disaster management, aiding, controlling and managing the impact of heavy rains and floods in Sudan, has also called on the public to volunteer or donate to their initiatives to provide aid to victims of the Sudan floods.

Footage circulated online show the impact of the heavy rainfall in Sudan and the damages it has caused. Some have shown concern that the floods could pose health risks, leading to epidemic waterborne diseases and environmental disaster.

A few governmental and non-governemtal rescue teams have traveled to areas that are most affected by the heavy rainfall to reduce damage.
