South Sudan Human Rights Defenders Network Recognises South Sudanese Human Rights Defenders

South Sudan Human Rights Defenders Network (SSHRDN) recognised outstanding South Sudanese human rights defenders on the third edition of the South Sudan Human Rights Defenders Network Awards (SSHRDN) Human Rights Defenders (HRD) on the occasion of this year’s International Human Rights Defenders Day.

On the occasion of the 2024 SSHRDN HRD Awards, nine winners, including two women, were awarded in nine categories on 9 December 2024 at Palm Africa Hotel in Juba, South Sudan.

Award accolades:

1. Women Human Rights Defender of the Year: Zahra Said Ali

2. Lifetime Human Rights Defender of the Year (Veteran Human Rights Defender of the Year: James Ninrew

3. Climate Champion Human Rights Defender of the Year: Maura Ajak

4. Next Generation Youth Human Rights Defender of the Year: Juma Tikol Marino

5. Outstanding Human Rights Defender of the Year: Daniel Laat Kon

6. Persons with Disabilities Rights Human Rights Defender of the Year: Abacha Ahmed Ibrahim

7. Greater Equatoria Human Rights Defender of the Year: Juma Tikol Marino

8. Greater Upper Nile Human Rights Rights Defender of the Year: Bol Deng Bol

9. Greater Bhar El Ghazal Human Rights Rights Defender of the Year: Steven Robo

As the Coordinator for Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Juma Tikol Marino walked away with two awards for his exemplary role an achievements in advancing human rights.

SSHRDN is a non-profit, non-political civil society network that is identified by the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) with the registration number 2284. It is a coalition of civil society organisations and individuals working to protect promotion of human rights in South Sudan. SSHRDN was established as an independent entity partnering with international and regional Human Rights Power Houses, including the Ugandan based Pan African Human Rights Defenders Network (PAHRDN) and DefendDefenders.
