Torrential rains and floods in Sudan have killed at least 90 people, and destroyed more than 19,984 homes and more than 3,201 acres of land.

More than 35,215 homes have been partially destroyed and almost 5,379 livestock died due to the flooding, reports Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS). Dozens of schools, and hundreds of offices and shops have been damaged or destroyed as well.

More than 1,600 water sources have become contaminated or are non-functional, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Sudan.

Khartoum, Blue Nile, and River Nile states are among the hardest-hit by the floods. Damage has also been reported in El Gezira, El Gadarif, West Kordofan and South Darfur.

Sudan is in the midst of its rainy season, which lasts from June to October. Every year, during the rainy or wet season, Sudan reports several casualties and property losses. This year, however, Sudan has been hit by one of the worst rainy seasons. Heavy rains have triggered a rise of the River Nile by up to 17.5 metres, the highest level in 100 years. In addition to heavy rainfall, poor infrastructure and lack of adequate drainage system result in floods, causing losses of life and property, and soon after, outbreak of diseases such as cholera.

Since 2013, a volunteer group of young people called Nafeer have been working to aid families that have been affected by the heavy rains and flash floods in various areas of Khartoum and other states in Sudan.

They have delegates across the world to receive donations. In addition, Nafeer recently announced collaborating with Sudan NextGen, a US non-profit organisation, to receive donations from a wider network. Under this initiate, they aim to collect USD10,000. The donations will help volunteers on the ground provide shelter, food and sanitation for those impacted. sudannextgen.com/project/نفير-سودان/

There are many other initiatives taking place in many countries where the Sudanese Diaspora is significant. They’re collecting donations such as food, clothing and the necessities to send to Sudan. There are also charity organisations such as Red Crescent societies around the MENA region who are providing aid to Sudan. Follow @hash_sudan for other ways to help those affected by Sudan’s floods.
