The Sudan Humanitarian Crisis Conference 2023 is set to take place from 18 to 20 November 2023 in Cairo, Egypt. Fikra for Studies and Development and other partners are hosting the public international conference on the humanitarian situation in Sudan.
War in Sudan erupted in 15 April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by the de facto ruler of Sudan General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by the leader of the RSF, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti). At least 9,000 people have been killed and more than 7 million have been displaced. At least 3 million people have been internally displaced, and at least 4 million have fled the country to neighbouring countries such as Egypt, Chad, South Sudan and Ethiopia.

Under the theme ‘Unleashing Hope: Revitalising Response to the Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan’, the conference will tackle the topics: social protection; food security; impact of war on the health system; gender-based violence; and coordination, integration, and logistical obstacles to the work of relief organisations in Sudan.
The Sudan Humanitarian Crisis Conference 2023 will be held under the broad auspices of the Sudanese Civil Society. Fikra for Studies and Development partnered with various organisations, including the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of the Sudan (OGSS), The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA), the Sudanese Journalists Association (SJA), Darfur Bar Association (DBA), the Sudanese Development Call Organisation (Nidaa), and the Norwegian Refugees Council (NRC) to organise the conference.
Over the course of three days is set to discuss and review the humanitarian situation in Sudan: identify the obstacles to an effective humanitarian aid process, propose potential practical interventions aimed at overcoming obstacles and facilitating the implementation of humanitarian assistance efforts in Sudan. The three days of the conference will cover:• The first day of the conference will include plenary sessions and a presentation on the current situation.• The second day of the conference, participants will be divided into working groups focused on each of the different themes of the conference in order to develop specific recommendations in each field.• The third will include a plenary session to present the outcome of each working group.
The primary purpose of the conference is to further enhance collaboration and effort between grass-root, home-grown initiatives and groups, with international humanitarian aid organisation in order to develop a comprehensive and workable framework for delivering humanitarian aid to Sudan during the ongoing conflict. The proposed framework will be developed during the conference by addressing multiple thematic areas and seeking integration, efficacy, functionality, and practicability.
