In the third month of the Sudan uprising, Sudan Professionals Association (SPA) has called for a mass procession, named “موكب الرحيل” or the ‘Procession of the Departing’, on Thursday 21 February 2019, starting at 1 pm from Al-Souq Al-Arabi, heading towards the Republican Palace, still calling for the step down of President Omar Al Bashir and his regime.

SPA has called on peaceful protests starting from 19 February, which marked exactly two months since the protests began. Dubbed as the Sudan uprising, the protests began on 19 December 2018 due to a hike in prices of basic commodities such as bread and fuel shortages. Since then, thousands of protesters have taken to streets across Sudan, calling for the downfall of Al Bashir and his regime. Government forces have responded to protests with live ammunition, rubber bullets and tear gas. At least 50 people have been killed, hundreds injured and more than a 1,000 arrested.

Small protests have been reported in different areas in Sudan since 19 February but a bigger protest is expected on 21 February, where thousands are expected to take to the streets in Khartoum and other cities across Sudan.

SPA has called on the participation of doctors, lawyers, teachers, schools, universities, hospitals and other entities. On 20 February, SPA has called on schools, teachers and students not to participate in the ongoing Sudan’s school certificate examinations, and to support teachers who have stood with protesters against police forces and the regime. SPA’s call pays tribute to all those who were killed or arrested in the peaceful protests, most of which who were school and university students as young as 16 years of age.

Protesters have begun giving out posters about the procession of Thursday 21 February.
