Sudan Protests Still Strong

Earlier this week, the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) called for further anti-government protests on Thursday, 7 February, referred to as ‘The Procession for the Detained and Tortured’.

Thousands of protesters across Sudan took to the streets calling for President Omar Al Bashir and his regime to step down. The largest protests took place in Khartoum and Kassala.

The peaceful protests came shortly after the government announced that it will release all those who were arrested for protesting. Reports say at least 1,000 men and women were arrested.

The procession also marks a week since the death of 33-year-old school teacher Ahmed Al Khair, who died on Thursday, 31 January after government forces beat and tortured him to death in detention. Protesters were heard chanting Al Khair’s name in his hometown in Khashm El Girba in Kassala during protests on Thursday.

In addition to Al Khair, two other detained protesters Faiz Abdullah and Hassan Talqa died while in custody in North Kordofan on 31 January. The number of deaths since the Sudan uprising began on 19 December has climbed to 57.

The procession of 7 February have been much-anticipated. Videos on social media show protesters taking to the streets on 6 February to encourage and remind protesters of the procession. Posters were also given out.

Although no casualties have been reported on 7 February, several protesters have been arrested or beaten by police forces.

One of the most powerful images of the protests of 7 February was an image two young men, who were arrested for protesting, laying down in a police vehicle and surrounded by police officials. While down, one of the young men, who has been identified as pharmacist Muhab Ahmed Tambal, is seen raising up the Sudanese flag. Tambal was later released. The image of Tambal raising the flag quickly went viral on social media, even inspiring new artwork.

Triggered by a hike in prices of basic commodities and shortages, the Sudan uprising is ongoing throughout Sudan, calling for Al Bashir and his regime to ‘Just Fall’. SPA has called on another procession on Sunday, 10 February in Omdurman, starting at 1 pm near Omdurman women’s prison.
