Sudan Reports 147 New COVID-19 Cases; 5,173 Total Cases and 298 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 147 new COVID-19 cases and 12 new deaths on Sunday, 31 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 5,173 and the total number of deaths to 298.

The ministry also reported 99 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,522.

In addition, on Monday, 1 June 2020, the Sovereign Council has announced the extension of the partial lockdown imposed in Khartoum for an additional 14 days until 18 June 2020.

According to the ministry, out of the 147 newly reported cases, 113 are from Khartoum, 10 from El Gezira, eight from Kassala, six from El Gadarif, five from Sennar, two from West Darfur, one from North Kordofan, one from from the White Nile and one from the Red Sea. Out of the 12 newly reported deaths, five are from Khartoum, four from El Gezira, two from El Gadarif, and one from North Kordofan.

Out of the total 5,096 positive cases in Sudan, 4,078 are from Khartoum, 367 from El Gezira, 160 from El Gadarif, 136 from North Kordofan, 113 from Sennar, 68 from North Darfur, 51 from the White Nile, 48 from Kassala, 35 from South Darfur, 26 from West Darfur, 22 from the River Nile, 15 from Ash Shamaliyah, 14 from East Darfur, 11 from West Kordofan, 11 from Red Sea, eight from the Blue Nile, six from South Kordofan and four from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors has closed with the exception of those in healthcare, and food and beverage. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from 19 May. On 1 June, the partial lockdown has been further extended to 18 June.

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
