Sudan Reports 148 New COVID-19 Cases; 6,730 Total Cases and 413 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 148 new COVID-19 cases and 12 new deaths on Tuesday, 9 June 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 6,730 and the total number of deaths to 413.

The ministry also reported 76 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,278.

On 1 June 2020, the Sovereign Council extended the partial lockdown imposed in Khartoum until 18 June 2020.

According to the ministry, out of the 148 newly reported cases, 120 are from Khartoum, 19 from El Gezira, four from El Gadarif, two from West Kordofan, one from the White Nile, one from North Kordofan and one from South Kordofan. Out of the 12 newly reported deaths, four are from Khartoum, four from El Gezira, three from the Red Sea, and one from North Kordofan.

Out of the total 6,730 positive cases in Sudan, 5,218 are from Khartoum, 577 from El Gezira, 184 from El Gadarif, 145 from North Kordofan, 128 from Sennar, 95 from North Darfur, 82 from the White Nile, 59 from Kassala, 55 from the Red Sea, 39 from the River Nile, 36 from South Darfur, 26 from West Darfur, 22 from Ash Shamaliyah, 19 from East Darfur, 19 from West Kordofan, 15 from the Blue Nile, seven from South Kordofan and four from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from 19 May. On 1 June, the partial lockdown has been further extended to 18 June.

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
