Sudan Reports 181 New COVID-19 Cases; 1,111 Total Cases and 59 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 181 new COVID-19 cases and seven new deaths on Friday, 8 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 1,111 and the total number of deaths to 59.

This is the highest reported number in a single day in Sudan. According to the ministry, out of the 181 newly reported cases, 140 are from Khartoum, 14 from North Kordofan, 11 from South Darfur, six from El Gezira, five from El Gadarif, two from River Nile, one from Ash Shamaliyah, one from West Darfur and one from Kassala. Out of the seven newly reported deaths, four are from Khartoum, two from North Kordofan and one from El Gadarif.

The ministry also reported 10 new recoveries. To date, 102 have recovered.

According to the ministry, out of the total 1,111 positive cases in Sudan, 934 are from Khartoum, 45 from El Gezira, 38 from North Kordofan, 26 from El Gadarif, 20 from Sennar, 16 from South Darfur, seven from River Nile, seven from Ash Shamaliyah, five from West Kordofan, four from North Darfur, two from West Darfur, two from East Darfur, two from White Nile, one from Red Sea, one from Central Darfur and one from Darfur. To date, there are 16 states with COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

On Friday, 8 May, the Sudanese government also announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors are closed for three weeks with the exception of those in the healthcare, and food and beverage sectors. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

The Federal Ministry of Health recently launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
