Sudan Reports 189 New COVID-19 Cases; 5,499 Total Cases and 314 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 189 new COVID-19 cases and seven new deaths on Tuesday, 2 June 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 5,499 and the total number of deaths to 314.

The ministry also reported 86 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,711.

On Monday, 1 June 2020, the Sovereign Council has announced the extension of the partial lockdown imposed in Khartoum for an additional 14 days until 18 June 2020. 

According to the ministry, out of the 189 newly reported cases, 137 are from Khartoum, 29 from El Gezira, nine from El Gadarif, six from the White Nile, five from Ash Shamaliyah, three from Sennar, three from the Red Sea, two from East Darfur, two from the River Nile, one from West Kordofan and one from North Nordofan. Out of the seven newly reported deaths, five are from Khartoum, one from El Gezira, and one from North Nordofan.

Out of the total 5,499 positive cases in Sudan, 4,313 are from Khartoum, 420 from El Gezira, 169 from El Gadarif, 137 from North Kordofan, 116 from Sennar, 68 from North Darfur, 57 from the White Nile, 52 from Kassala, 35 from South Darfur, 26 from West Darfur, 24 from the River Nile, 20 from Ash Shamaliyah, 16 from East Darfur, 13 from Red Sea, 12 from West Kordofan, 11 from the Blue Nile, six from South Kordofan and four from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from 19 May. On 1 June, the partial lockdown has been further extended to 18 June.

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
