Sudan Reports 200 New COVID-19 Cases; 4,346 Total Cases and 195 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 200 new COVID-19 cases and 11 new deaths on Tuesday, 26 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 4,346 and the total number of deaths to 195.

According to the ministry, out of the 200 newly reported cases, 145 are from Khartoum, 16 from El Gadarif, seven from El Gezira, seven from the White Nile, seven from Sennar, four from West Darfur, four from North Darfur, three from North Kordofan, three form East Darfur, and one from each of the following states: South Darfur, the River Nile, West Kordofan and Central Darfur. Out of the 11 newly reported deaths, six are from Khartoum, four from El Gezira, and one from the White Nile.

The ministry also reported 161 new recoveries. To date, 749 have recovered.

Out of the total 4,346 positive cases in Sudan, 3,476 are from Khartoum, 285 from El Gezira, 130 from El Gadarif, 124 from North Kordofan, 98 from Sennar, 37 from Kassala, 34 from South Darfur, 32 from North Darfur, 23 from West Darfur, 28 from White Nile, 16 from River Nile, 14 from East Darfur, 13 from Ash Shamaliyah, 10 from Red Sea, 10 from West Kordofan, eight from Blue Nile, five from South Kordofan and three from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors has closed with the exception of those in healthcare, and food and beverage. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from Tuesday, 19 May. 

The Federal Ministry of Health recently launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
